What to Wear for Warm Weather Adventure
Picking the right gear for your warm weather hike is easy if you know what you need. But what do you need? With the immense array of options on the shelves and wall displays of outdoor gear retailers, how do you decide what will meet the mark when it comes to performance, durability, comfort and moisture management. There’s no doubt you will be sweaty and require a breathable quick drying fabric next to your skin, in particular; your feet.
Having a damp pair of socks inside your boots can really make for an uncomfortable, even painful day on the trail. So which fabric best suites this type of adventure? It may seem a bit overwhelming, so we are here to lend our perspective on two different fibers we use in a lot of our products. Both fibers will keep feet dry and comfortable depending on the adventure. But which should you choose for a warm whether hike?
First, here are the facts about two different fiber options;
Merino wool is a special, fine grade of wool that originally came from Merino sheep. It shares the characteristics classic to wool, but what makes Merino wool different is the softness and comfort provided by its finer diameter. Like wool, the fiber is remarkably elastic and can be stretched and return to its original shape. Wool can also absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture before feeling damp, helping to maintain a layer of dry air next to the skin. This will keep feet dry and help to hold in body heat.
Advantages of Merino Wool:
- Excellent warmth
- Resists odor
- Naturally wicks moisture
drirelease® is a patented fiber technology which intimately blends moisture-absorbing and moisture-repelling fibers together. The moisture-absorbing fibers (typically polyester) pull moisture through the fabric while the moisture-repelling fibers (typically TENCEL®) push the moisture to the surface of the garment where it can evaporate quickly as airflow moves across the fabric. drirelease® fabric is incredibly quick drying, lightweight and eco-friendly, as no chemical application is used on the fiber.
Advantages of drirelease:
- Excellent moisture-wicking performance
- FreshGuard® blocks odor
- Keeps feet cool
For warm weather adventures we would suggest reaching for a pair of socks that feature a synthetic blend, like our Cool-Lite or Peak 2 Pub Series of socks.
If you plan to be out in the heat, these socks will keep your feet dry and blister free. The combination of moisture absorbing and moisture repelling fibers will move sweat away from the foot, to where it can evaporate quickly. During a stop to re-fuel and hydrate these socks will dry quickly, especially if you pop your boots off and let the sun speed up the process.
The drirelease® fiber is embedded with FreshGuard®, an eco-friendly odor neutralizer. It eliminates odors in garments by blocking odor-causing sebaceous body oils from attaching to the fabric – also stopping the attraction of odor-causing bacteria. For multi-day trips, these socks will stay fresh after multiple uses.
